How to Make Your Fresh Cut Flowers Last Longer

Getting fresh cut flowers as a bouquet or flower arrangement is a wonderful gift whether it comes from a loved one or you just treat yourself. It’s something you want to last as long as possible. While we use only the freshest flowers at Carithers, there are still steps that you can take to make those flowers last as long as possible. Here are our tips for enjoying them for many days to come. Water First If they have not arrived in water through our hand delivery service or you bought loose flowers from us, the first thing you should is get the flowers in water. The stems are their life support system, so as soon as you can get water flowing through them, the better. Check Water Temperature Don’t put the fresh cut flowers in cold water. Preferably, it should be room temperature or warm. The container where the flowers will be arranged should be a third to a half full. If the water is higher and comes into contact with the foliage, this foliage will rot after constant contact with the water so the water line should be below that. Give the Flowers a Little Space Don’t crowd … Read More about How to Make Your Fresh Cut Flowers Last Longer »

National Gardening Exercise Day is June 6th

Each year, National Gardening Exercise Day is celebrated on June 6th by gardeners all over the country. This is a great time to get out in the fresh air, burn some calories, and nurture the beauty of nature. It’s not clear who created this special day, but we are pretty sure it was a business or organization dedicated to gardening. There are a number of ways to incorporate exercise into gardening routine. Before you get started, you should warm up your muscles for a few minutes no matter what your age to help minimize any strain on your muscles or joints. This can involve some stretching of your legs and arms. Gardening uses a variety of motions within normal activities with raking, mowing, weeding, digging, pruning and moving plants and flowers around. You will find yourself bending down on one leg or both legs, knelling, squatting, lunging and walking. Perhaps you will even work in some climbing, depending on your garden and what you are doing. It is important to remember to go at your own pace and enjoy what you are doing. Also keep in mind not to bend using your back muscle but do it from your knees. … Read More about National Gardening Exercise Day is June 6th »

What Type of Flower is Appropriate for What Occasion?

Flowers have always offered a lot of meaning with different varieties symbolizing various feelings. Since many flowers do carry so much symbolism, it is important to consider these meanings when planning to include them in a special occasion like a holiday, event, or party. Here we have put together some of the most common flowers, their meanings and where they might be used. Weddings and Anniversaries Seasonal flowers work best for weddings as these tend to coordinate well with the theme of the wedding and the season when it is held. For weddings and anniversaries, it does not necessarily matter what type of flower you use; just make sure it is something that fits your personal style and taste. Of course, roses always represent love and are traditionally a favorite anniversary flower arrangement. Christmas The poinsettia is traditionally seen at Christmas as is the amaryllis and the Christmas cactus. You will also see red berries and many red and white flower combinations. Easter Most often seen at Easter are the calla lily as well as other white flowers, including white roses and carnations. Thanksgiving Thanksgiving brings a bounty of fall flowers in rich, deep hues, including roses, carnations, alstromeria, lilies, … Read More about What Type of Flower is Appropriate for What Occasion? »
