Veterans’ Day is November 11th

Hanukkah3Next Monday is Veterans’ Day, which is celebrated every year on November 11th. This blog post provides background on this special day of remembrance and thanks for all our war veterans. We also have some information on some local Veterans’ Day events in the Atlanta area.

Origins and Observance of Veterans’ Day

Veterans’ Day is the anniversary of the signing of the armistice, which ended World War I. The reason it is celebrated on this day was because the armistice was signed on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918 to end World War I. In 1926, the U.S. Congress recognized it as a special day of prayer and thanksgiving, and it finally became a legal holiday in 1938.armed1

However, it is really become a special day to thank all veterans of all wars for their service on behalf of everyone in the United States.

Observances usually include parades and church services. This is one of the many days that people put out an American flag at their home or business. Some schools, offices, and financial institutions are closed.

Atlanta Veterans’ Day Events

There are many events in Atlanta that you can participate in and show your thanks to our veterans.

One special celebration is the Georgia Veterans Day Parade Association of Atlanta, Inc. (GVDPA), which celebrates 32 years of positively impacting Georgia Veterans and the community with its mission – to honor, support and thank all who have served and are currently serving in our military.

They are hosting the nation’s largest Veterans Day Parade on Saturday, November 9th. This year’s theme is “Honoring our Korean War Veterans and All Who Preserved Freedom.”  The evening features the annual Freedom Ball at the Oceans Ballroom at the Georgia Aquarium.armed2
