National Good Neighbor Day is observed annually on September 28.It was started in the 1970s by Becky Mattson and made an official day by President Jimmy Carter in 1978.
The national celebration was created to acknowledge the importance of having and being a good neighbor. Often, good neighbors become good friends. They are there to watch over our homes when we are away or help out with the kids, pets, and/or mail. And, we do the same for them.
This is especially important considering how much more we spend online with virtual friendships and often forget about the value and importance of face-to-face interaction. When it comes to our neighbors, staying close to them and being good to each other also helps build a sense of community as well as improves the security of the surrounding area.
To celebrate National Good Neighbor Day, do something nice for your neighbor today. That can be a kind note to let them know you appreciate them. Or, it might be helping them out on a project.
