Peony

Carithers Flowers Design Favorite

The Peony is a flowering plant that can live for up to one hundred years and produce beautiful blooms year after year. It is the traditional floral symbol of China and the state flower of Indiana. These lush full flowers are often associated with wealth and abundance. The Peony also stands for romance and is regarded as an omen of a happy marriage and of good fortune. The perennial is native to Asia, Southern Europe, and Western North America, and there are between twenty-five and forty different species. Some Peony plants can be grown as trees that grow up to six feet tall.

According to mythology, the Peony is named for Paeon who was a student of Asclepius, the Greed god of healing and medicine. Paeon was saved from a jealous Asclepius by Zeus and turned into a flower. Some varieties of Peony have beautiful fragrances. The bold and plush blossoms come in nearly every color except blue. The Peony can be a wonderful accent plant or it can be grown as a border plant since the bushes grow to about three feet tall.
