African Lily or "Agapanthus"

Native to South Africa

The African Lily is one of the most beautiful and well recognized flowers in the lily family. Though it is originally from the Cape of Good Hope, it is often called the Lily of the Nile. African Lilies come mostly in a range of blue (light blue) to purple. African Lilies show off their colors much longer than most other lilies as they are in bloom from Spring into Autumn.

This flower can be slightly unpredictable in the spring and early summer as it is normal for the plant to take anywhere from 20 to 90 days to germinate. Its leaves are strap shaped and often peel back over themselves as the flowers blooms and continues to open. While they have a long stem life and only require average amounts of water, be careful when handling uncut African Lilies as they can cause skin irritation. The Lily of the Nile is also one of the most fragrant flows and attracts butterflies. Since this plant is also found in southern England and Ireland, it is less susceptible to cold temperatures, though still can’t withstand frost in the winters.

Growing Recommendations - Agapanthus or "African Lily"

Regardless of what region, though, African Lilies are most common on the banks of rivers and lakes where they can get ample water. Despite the plant’s ability to thrive in colder clients, it is recommended that planted and cut African Lilies receive direct sunlight and maintained at a moderate temperature if indoors. Not surprising due to its beautiful blues and pleasant fragrance, the African Lily is common in many different types of bouquets and flower arrangements. Furthermore, the plant can live up to three weeks after being cut, making it one of the most enduring flowers available for both outdoor gardens and in house flower arrangements.
